........for visiting our website, we hope that you will find it informative and that, when you visit Phnom Penh, you might be tempted to take a trip in one of our cyclos, which are Clean, Green and great for Sight Seein'! How the Centre began and developed A survey of pedicab drivers conducted by the Urban Resource Centre in 1999 lead to the establishment of a centre for cyclo drivers which provided washing facilities, medical care and opportunities to learn a variety of skills. Initial funding came from a sponsored cycle ride, organized by Cambodian and foreign volunteers, and thereafter a number of individuals and organizations assisted in meeting running costs. In 2003 the Centre moved to its present premises in Street 158. In August 2005 the Centre, now officially called the Cyclo Centre Phnom Penh, became an independent Cambodian Non-Government Organisation (NGO), registered with the Ministry of the Interior. At the moment the Centre is able to employ employ three full time core staff - Ms Nouv Sarany, the Co-ordinator, Ms Pal Holly, the Administrator and Accountant and Mr Im Sambat, the Project Officer. Part-time and volunteer staff are engaged in medical consultations and English Language classes while staff from international and local organizations undertake training within specific sponsored projects. Several other volunteers also work to support the goal of the Centre and their number and function are determined by the Co-ordinator. The exact number of cyclo drivers in Phnom Penh is not precisely known because of the itinerant nature of the work, but more than 1400 are regular users and beneficiaries of the Centre. Of these 1335 are registered members. To find out more about various aspects of the work of the Centre click on any of the green bars to the right.
